Method developed by Colombian improves the accuracy of supplies for clinical diagnostics; what is it about? Juan Fernando Bermudez leads strategies that have optimized manufacturing and quality assurance processes in the in vitro diagnostics industry. In an industry where precision defines the useful life of a medical diagnosis, Colombian Juan Fernando Bermúdez is today a reference in innovation applied to in vitro diagnostics. In his role as Director of Strategy and Quality at a U.S. company supplier of biological materials to laboratories and medical device manufacturers, Bermúdez has led projects that improve efficiency, traceability and accuracy in critical areas such as coagulation, blood typing and development of reference reagents. Thanks to a strategy that combines science, organizational management and quality culture, the expert was able to reduce by 57 % the observations on compliance parameters required by global pharmaceuticals. This advance has strengthened the accuracy of millions of diagnostic tests used in hospitals, research centers and laboratories around the world. According to Grand View Research, the global in vitro diagnostics market is expected to grow between 5.6% and 7.4% annually, with an estimated value of $150 billion by 2030, led by the United States. However, Bermúdez underlines that “Colombia has the talent and potential to integrate into the global diagnostics industry, but faces logistical, regulatory and cultural challenges in terms of blood donation and development of applied biotechnology”. The expert has developed a diagnostic system that identifies structural flaws in the supply chain and allows corrections to be applied before they impact the samples stability. “Quality assurance may not be limited to a technical protocol, it must be integrated as part of the organizational culture,” says Bermúdez, convinced that operational excellence begins with the human dimension of scientific tasks.
